Health Sciences
Librarian
Duties and responsibilities: A librarian is a person who
chooses, obtains sorts, categorizes, circulates, and maintains various library
materials. Professional health science librarians carry out similar duties by
assisting students, patients, and health practitioners and providing them with
guidance to find the information they need. To enter this career, you need a
thorough understanding of fundamental library principles, along with practical
experience in a real world setting. If this sounds interesting, keep reading
this career guide to find out if this is the perfect job for you.
Salary: $45,000 - $49,000
Education: a student must
graduate from high school, taking classes such as English, math, typing, and
science. A four year bachelor’s degree is then required, including courses such
as science and computer science. A master’s degree in library science (MLS) is mandatory.
Courses include scientific literature, bio medical, communication, bibliographic
resource use, library organization and management, and standard cataloging
systems. While health science librarians are not required to be certified, the
Medical Library Association does offer certification examinations which would
help a librarian advance to a higher position.
Reflection: I would not like to be one. I wouldn’t like to
be one because all you have to do is organize books. It seems fun because you
get to help people but most of the time all you’re going to have to do is
organize the shelf's and put the books where they belong. It seems exciting but
it doesn’t catch my attention.
